Researchers from the University of Würzburg studied the effects of a high dose of sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) in healthy volunteers and found that it can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by about 50 percent. They also found that the drug is safe in the study’s volunteers.
The results are published in the journal Neurology.
In a separate study, they published their findings in the journal Neurology.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, has been used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) for over 30 years.
The study found that sildenafil caused a 50 percent reduction in Alzheimer's disease risk compared with placebo. It also showed that sildenafil reduced the risk of Alzheimer's by a small percentage.
“A high dose of sildenafil can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, while a low dose of sildenafil may be a good candidate for prevention,” the researchers wrote.
The study also found that Viagra can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease by up to 50 percent. In addition, sildenafil can be used to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s by up to 80 percent, but researchers were unsure if it would reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s by more than half.
“It’s important to remember that this study was designed as a proof-of-concept study to see how safe it would be for patients to take Viagra on an ongoing basis,” the researchers wrote.
The study was funded by the British National Formulary, a charity that funds research and education on health care.
The study was led by Dr. Peter A. Luitjens, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Würzburg.
Dr. Luitjens, who received his B. A. in Geffen School of Medicine at the University of Würzburg in 2017, is the first author of the study.
Miettinen, of the University of Würzburg, said in a statement: “This new study provides new proof of concept that sildenafil can reduce Alzheimer’s disease risk, while also providing new hope for further research in this area.
“We continue to work closely with Dr. Luitjens and his team to understand the underlying mechanisms behind the effects of Viagra on Alzheimer’s disease and provide new treatment options that could help patients, caregivers and doctors.”

MANILA, Philippines - Men with erectile dysfunction (ED) may not respond well to Viagra's little blue pill, which may cause side effects. That's a new development in the erectile dysfunction treatment that has been rejected by the FDA on a number of occasions since the drug's patent expired last year. "We think it's a good thing for the FDA to reject our product," said Dr. Luiz Vaz, a urologist who is currently with Pfizer Inc. He said Pfizer had a "great history" of treating ED, and he believes it will be successful if Viagra is eventually approved. Viagra has been approved by the FDA for use in men who suffer from ED, but is still under patent until now. "If we don't get it approved, we will have to wait for the FDA to approve it," said Dr. Vaz, who also said the drug may be an over-the-counter product.
"If the FDA approved it, then I would ask them to approve it," he said.
The FDA rejected the product a month ago because of safety concerns. "I don't think they have the time to make sure they don't approve it, and then they can go to the FDA and get it approved," he said.
The drug was approved by the FDA for men with mild to moderate symptoms of ED, but not enough to be approved by the drug's makers. A spokesman said the drug is not available to treat any other medical conditions, including diabetes or heart disease.
There was some concern the drug was dangerous. The FDA said that its safety profile included an increase in serious side effects. It also warned that Viagra is not approved for use in women. Viagra is available only by prescription in most countries. It is not approved for use by men over the age of 18.

A spokesman said Pfizer has not approved it for use by men with ED.A spokesman said the drug has a "very high safety profile," with side effects including a headache and dizziness. The FDA has not approved Viagra for use in women. "We don't want women who may have been advised to use Viagra, and they will need to get it for themselves," said Dr. Vaz.
A spokesman for Pfizer said the company will continue to market Viagra as a "product of our own," as it is "not approved by the FDA and is not available to be used by women." It is not known whether Viagra will be available in the United States or if it will be available elsewhere.
Pfizer Inc. has said it has received reports of counterfeit Viagra being sold on the Internet. The Food and Drug Administration has not identified any potential side effects of the drug.
In a separate report on Monday, Pfizer said that it has not detected any cases of counterfeit Viagra being sold on the Internet. It is unclear if the FDA has detected any cases of counterfeit Viagra.
